OPPORTUNITIES TO SERVE

Mission is an important part of Rockville United Church. We were founded in 1967 when two churches merged in order to advocate for those in need in Rockville and Montgomery County.  From that beginning RUC created and led Community Ministries of Rockville (now Community Reach of Montgomery County).  We have created or participated in many outreach mission projects since.

We invite you to join our Church in Society Committee (CIS) for any of our mission work--and to bring us new ways we can help others outside our congregation. We are blessed to be a healthy, growing church and many of us joined RUC to give back. One of the best ways to get to know us--and for us is to get to know you--is to participate in the life of the church in addition to Sunday worship.  We invite you to join any of our Ministries  as well as participate with our Church in Society Committee.

A close companion to the Church in Society Committee is our Social Justice Committee.  They focus on societal change.

You will be welcomed!

New Neighbors Interfaith Alliance

We partner with this local interfaith organization that helps to settle refugees and asylum seekers in Montgomery County.  Read their newsletters about their activities and needs.

Service Saturdays

Meets monthly at RUC to prepare meals for Rockland and Jefferson House.  A time of fellowship and cooking!  The group also assembles hygiene kits for homeless men and women.

Christmas Giving

Each year we select an international church or organization that needs help and ask for special donations.  Some of the projects we have supported are Caran Girls School Mozambique;  Phillipine Relief after Typhoon Haiyan;  Universal Hope Initiative, Liberia; House of Hope, Haiti, Frontera de Cristo, US-Mexican Border.

Rainbow Place Shelter

A homeless women's shelter that's open September - May for women to receive a hot meal and a place to sleep.

Lord's Table Lunches

Volunteers prepare and serve one lunch a month, September-May to all who gather at a local Gaithersburg church.

Children and Youth Mission

Mission is an important part of life at RUC and we work to involve our children and youth in all mission.  In addition, they have many mission projects of their own, including:

  • Food drives

  • First Sunday Service Projects

  • Back to School Backpacks

Community Reach of Montgomery County

RUC founded this nonprofit agency in 1967 (formerly called Community Ministries of Montgomery County) and is still a major contributor of time and treasure.  Read their newsletters.

Giving Tree

Each Christmas we ask residents of Jefferson and Rockland Houses to give us their wish lists.  Their wishes are placed on our Giving Trees and the congregation purchases and wraps presents for them.

Refugee Projects

RUC works with SAMU (an multi-national aid agency) to provide clothing and bi-lingual books to refugees and New Neighbors Interfaith Alliance who help refugees settle in Montgomery County.
