Who We Are

Rockville United Church (RUC) is an inclusive, progressive church community that seeks to grow and develop its vision of Christian mission and ministry. In 2020-2021 RUC undertook a Visioning process that led to the creation of a Strategic Plan. The four Mission Priorities that are part of our Strategic Plan reflect how we relate to each other and the wider world and provide direction for our life together.

RUC Mission Priorities:

  • Care of the RUC community

  • Care of Our Neighbors

  • Commitment to Social Justice

  • Care of the Earth

We care for the RUC community by being:

  • An Open and Affirming/More Light church: RUC embraced our LGBTQ+ members and friends in 2001 by becoming an Open and Affirming/More Light congregation.

  • A Safe Church: RUC cares for its youngest members as a Safe Church. All who working children have a background check on file, and two adults are always present when working with a group of children. We provide Safe Church training to all who work with children and youth.

  • A congregation that cares for one another through pastoral care, small group activities, and weekly hybrid worship services.

We care for our neighbors through our support of:

  • Community Reach (CR) of Rockville. In 1967 RUC founded an innovative faith-based organization that serves the most vulnerable members of the Rockville community. RUC remains deeply committed to its relationship with CR.

  • Rainbow Place of Rockville. RUC has committed to providing financial support for Rainbow Place’s creation of a shelter in Montgomery County for homeless youth, many of whom are members of the LGBTQ+ community.

We express our commitment to Social Justice by supporting:

  • Black Lives Matter in their quest for racial justice.

  • New Neighbors Interfaith Alliance as they provide resources to our new immigrant neighbors in Montgomery and Prince Georges Counties.

We care for the earth as:

  • An Earth Care congregation (Presbyterian Church USA) and a Green Justice Congregation (United Church of Christ). To maintain our certification in both programs, we commit to best practices for environmental stewardship.

  • A participating congregation in the Interfaith Partners for the Chesapeake. Interfaith Partners for the Chesapeake works to engage congregations in the Mid-Atlantic region to be good caretakers of our shared Chesapeake Bay watershed.
